The 2023 trading deadline has seen many ground-breaking trades. The Carolina Hurricanes tried their best to acquire Timo Meier, but their efforts didn't pay off. After Max Pacioretty suffered a season-ending injury, management tried to acquire San Jose Sharks' star player Timo Meier. The two sides engaged in trade negotiations with the Sharks until the closing seconds.

Timo Meier's trade to the New Jersey Devils

The San Jose Sharks traded Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. Meier is anticipated to team up with Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes in a top-six position. Meier is an all-around player. He is mostly a goal scorer. The Swiss winger has scored 66 goals since 2021–22, which places him 16th among all NHL players.

Meier has 52 points (31 goals, 21 assists) in 57 games this season after posting an NHL career-high 76 points (35 goals, 41 assists) in 77 games in 2021–22. Meier has missed the last three games due to an upper-body injury.

In the trade, the Sharks got forwards Fabian Zetterlund and Andreas Johnsson, defenders Shakir Mukhamadullin and Nikita Okhotiuk, a conditional first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, and second and seventh-round picks in the 2024 NHL Draft in exchange for Meier.

Defensive prospects Timur Ibragimov, Santeri Hatakka, Zachary Emond, Scott Harrington, and a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft were given to the Devils.

The Carolina Hurricanes lead the standings for the Eastern Conference's Metropolitan division. They have tallied 90 points with 41 wins and just 12 losses in 61 games.

Shayne Gostisbehere made his team debut in Arizona on Friday by scoring a power-play goal. On Sunday, he repeated that performance. The team's new #41 became the first defenseman in franchise history to score a power-play goal in both of his first two games.

Jesse Puljujarvi, a recently acquired forward, might make his Canes debut as soon as tonight. The 24-year-old winger had a meeting yesterday in Ottawa to address his visa concerns before traveling to Montreal to meet the team.
