Roosevelt High School Mourns the Loss of Kidus Getnet in Tragic Car Accident

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, students at Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls are coming to terms with the tragic loss of one of their own. Principal Tim Hazlett shared the devastating news in a letter to parents, notifying them of the student’s untimely death that occurred on Saturday.

According to the Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens, the incident took place when a vehicle, believed to be driven by a 15-year-old from Sioux Falls, collided with a tree after running a red light at the intersection of Bahnson Avenue and 26th Street. The accident transpired around 3:09 a.m. on Saturday, November 4.

Regrettably, 16-year-old Kidus Getnet, a passenger in the vehicle, lost his life at the scene. As of 10:30 a.m. on Monday, the condition of the driver remained unknown.

Notably, the vehicle involved in the crash had been reported stolen from western Sioux Falls. However, law enforcement is yet to determine whether the teenagers were responsible for the theft or how they came to be in possession of the stolen vehicle. An investigation will be carried out to reconstruct the crash and ascertain its cause.

Principal Hazlett has provided support to the students, giving them an opportunity to share information and ask questions on Monday. He encourages them to seek guidance from their parents, teachers, counselors, or other caring adults during this difficult time.
